Jimmie W. Scott, a former Executive Vice President and current member of the Board of Trustees at San Marcos Academy, was named Interim President of San Marcos Academy by the Board of Trustees at their recent meeting on campus.
Scott, who has a long history of service to the 107-year old school, was appointed as Interim President while the Trustee Search Committee continues seeking a replacement for Dr. John Garrison, who retired as President of the Academy Jan. 30 after serving in that capacity for almost seven years.
“The Trustees of San Marcos Academy heard a report from their Presidential Search Committee at our board meeting,” Susie Jaynes, Vice Chair of the Board, said. “They expressed gratitude for the conscientious work of the committee that presently is interviewing potential candidates for the position. Knowing how pivotal that decision will be to the future of the school, they were gratified to hear of the due diligence of the process. Gratefully they turned to one of their own members to fill the leadership role of president in the interim time.
“Jimmie Scott has given most of his working life in service to our school, and knowing his love and commitment to the students and faculty plus his residence in the community which will give him availability to the daily life of the school, the trustees unanimously chose Mr. Scott to serve until a permanent president can be confirmed.”
Interim President San Marcos Academy: Background
Scott first came to San Marcos Academy in 1964 as Associate Dean under President William H. Crook. A year later, he was promoted to Academic Dean by President Jack Byrom and later served as Academic Vice President and Executive Vice President, retiring in 1996.
While at the Academy, Scott also served six years on the Secondary Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was a member of several other committees for the organization. He also was a commissioner for the Accreditation Commission of the Texas Association of Baptist Schools.
Upon his retirement, Scott was awarded the coveted Exemplary Service Medal from the Academy for “distinguished service to God and man through Christian education.” He was named to the Academy’s Board of Trustees in 2005 and served one term as Chairman of the Board.
“Having spent most of my professional life at San Marcos Academy in one capacity or another, I am honored to serve as Interim President, and I am grateful to the Board for placing their faith in me,” Scott said. “The staff and faculty at SMA are second to none, and I look forward to working with them, as well as getting to know the students we all serve.”
Dr. Clay Sullivan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said he anticipates the announcement of the next President within a few months, but said he and the Board want to be certain that the person stepping into that position is the right person at the right time.
“During this period between now and the final selection, we are excited to have an Interim President who we know, without question, has a heart for the students, and a heart for San Marcos Academy,” Sullivan said. “Jimmie Scott is the perfect person to fill this role. He has a fantastic history with the school and is ideal for this time of transition.”
San Marcos Academy was founded in 1907 and is a fully accredited college preparatory school based on Christian values and committed to providing a quality education for young men and women.
