San Marcos Academy Academy Life

As a college preparatory school, San Marcos Academy provides a rigorous academic program of study. The SMA Experience, however, is not just about books and grades. Our desire is to see each student develop as a whole person: mentally, socially, physically and spiritually. To further this process, we provide a variety of experiences and opportunities outside the classroom.

When classes end, the Student Activities staff at San Marcos Academy goes to work, providing life-enriching opportunities for fun and social interaction. The hub for these activities is the Rec Center, which opens after school and on weekends. The Center features pool and ping-pong tables, video game and sports equipment, concessions, a recreational gym, a movie room, indoor heated pool, and fully equipped fitness center.

Students can also sign up for special events, such as trips, tours, contests and more.

San Marcos Academy also encourages students to get involved in sports, with high school and middle school athletic programs for boys and girls of all skill levels. Academy coaches place a higher value on how an athlete plays than on the outcome of a game; sportsmanship, integrity, and character on the field or court are the values that characterize a winner at San Marcos Academy. SMA offers 12 different sports as well as top-quality athletic facilities on our spacious, hill country campus.

Many extracurricular activities are offered at the Academy to help students learn to manage their time, make new friends, develop leadership skills, practice teamwork, and make positive contributions to the campus community. Among the campus organizations offered are National Honor Society, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Junior State of America and an International Student Organization.

A highly active Junior ROTC unit has been a feature of Academy life since 1917. The Bear Battalion provides leadership training to about one-third of all high school students who choose to take part in this program. Orienteering, marksmanship and color guard are just a few of the opportunities provided through JROTC.

At the end of a long, productive day, students in the residential life program return to their homes away from home in the girls or boys dormitories. Boarding students are a diverse group, representing a number of different countries, U.S. states and Texas cities. The residence life staff provide a nurturing, structured environment where students can develop life skills that will serve them well after graduation.
