San Marcos Academy is proud to offer its student the opportunity to participate in the 4-H program.
The name 4-H represents four personal development areas of focus within the 4-H program: head, heart,
hands, and health.
4-H in the United States is a youth organization administered by the National Institute of Food and
Agriculture of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), with its stated mission of
“engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.”
The overall goal of the 4-H program at San Marcos Academy is the development of citizenship, leadership,
responsibility and life skills. This is accomplished through experiential learning, hence their unofficial
motto “Learning is doing.” 4-H is generally thought of as an agriculturally focused organization;
however, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology programs.
4-H is not just for young men and women from farms or rural neighborhoods, but is open to all.
Today, 4-H and related programs exist in over 80 countries around the world; the organization and
administration varies from country to country. Each of these programs operates independently but
cooperatively through international exchanges, global education programs, and communications.
Through the San Marcos Academy 4-H program, students can take on an animal project, a home skills project or
even an ag mechanics project. Our students present their projects at youth shows and livestock shows in the
county or even throughout the state.
Students who want to do an animal projects, such as raising goats, rabbits or chickens, can house their animal
or animals at the Academy barn and pens. They can then work with their animals after school or at other arranged
times when staff is available.
Home skills projects, such as baking or arts and crafts, and ag mechanic projects are also encouraged and can
be entered for competition.
The SMA 4-H Club meets at least once each month and may plan other activities for club members during the year.
Head, Heart, Hands, and Health are the four Hs in 4-H, and they are the four values members work on through
fun and engaging programs.
The 4-H Pledge
