San Marcos Academy International Admissions

San Marcos AcademyóTop Quality International Boarding School in Texas
Today we all live in a truly international community. As such it is important that our students are introduced to students from all over the world. This interaction helps nurture a better understanding between countries and produces young men and women who are ready to take on the challenges of the international community with a better appreciation of different cultures, traditions and histories.

San Marcos Academy is one of the few Texas based boarding schools that actively seeks international students to live in our on-campus residence halls. About one-third of our current student population consists of international students from 14 different countries, providing a diverse cultural experience for all of our students. As a SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) certified school, our international students can come to the Academy to study on an F-1 visa. We also have an International Student Coordinator on our staff to assist our international students with any special needs or questions they may have.

San Marcos Academy provides a caring environment with superb academics for all students. In addition we have a wide variety of sports and activities that are not found in many private schools. As an example, San Marcos Academy is one of the very few schools with an equestrian program and a 4H program. We also offer a variety of fine arts which, unfortunately are being cut out of many public school programs today. Our goal at San Marcos Academy is to produce well-rounded young men and women, the leaders of tomorrow, whose lives are built on integrity and a strong moral compass. This is all accomplished in a caring and nurturing Christian environment.

San Marcos Academy provides all of our international students with the opportunity to improve and refine their ability to read, speak and comprehend English at a level necessary for success should they continue their college education in the United States. Historically, a large percentage of our international students continue their education in this country. San Marcos Academy provides our international students the opportunity to complete the TOEFL test on our campus prior to graduation. This test measures a studentís ability to communicate in English at a level necessary for college classes and is used by over 7000 colleges and universities in their application process.

Frequently Asked Questions about our International Program

When is the deadline?
San Marcos Academy has a rolling enrollment process which means our Admissions staff will review every application regardless of the time it was submitted. Prospective international students should also consider the amount of time it takes to acquire the proper student Visa when applying.

Are English Language Proficiency Test scores required?
English language proficiency test scores are strongly recommended for an international student applying to enter the Academy for his/her 11th grade year. All tests are considered regardless of score. The submission of test scores is welcomed for any student.

Which transcripts need to be submitted?
In order to properly transfer credit for the applicant's previous school(s), official transcripts including school name and seal are required. Transcripts must be translated into English.

Can SMA help with the required health insurance?
We provide health insurance thru United Health Care that covers the required immunizations as well as sickness and accidents for all international students. The fee for the 10 month's health insurance will be automatically billed to the student's account. To opt out of the above health insurance, proof of current insurance must be provided. Current insurance must be accepted in the United States to be considered valid.

Should documents be translated into English?
Our Admissions Office receives applications and documents from all over the world. It is important that any application, transcript, or document be translated into English before sending to our office.

What software is allowed for student use?
Only software that has been obtained legally will be supported by the San Marcos Academy technology staff. If in doubt, see the policy located in the Student Handbook (PDF).

What should International Students do when San Marcos Academy is closed?
Parents are encouraged to plan ahead for days that school is not in session during the academic year and the dorms/Academy is closed. The annual calendar posted at https://smabears.org shows these days. Parents are expected to provide travel plans for their students, so that staff can help coordinate getting students to and from the airport in Austin or San Antonio, and to the local bus station for their travel.

Please refer to this document for additional information on making travel plans during holiday periods.

How are allowances handled?
At the time of enrollment, parents are asked to decide and inform the Business Department the amount of allowance their student is to receive. To facilitate this, a local credit union provides a debit card service. Students can use the card in the bookstore, local businesses, and purchases made online. The Business Office assists students when problems arise with their cards/accounts.

What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL is a test that measures your studentís fluency in English reading and writing skills. Most colleges and universities require this test before an international student is accepted. Acceptance scores vary from school to school. There is a charge for the test, and this charge will be added to the studentís account for each administration the student is registered for. Study materials may be purchased online or in the school bookstore and are available for check out in our library.
