San Marcos Academy - Coeducational Boarding Schools in Texas

Why would parents who are considering sending their son or daughter to a private boarding school consider a coeducational boarding school in Texas versus a single sex school? There are a number of advantages and disadvantage to both types of schools, so let’s look at the advantages first.
  • Wider course selection – The curriculum for a mixed sex study population tends to offer more variety appealing to both males and females, rather than focusing on stereotypes related to each sex. This offers more opportunity to students in their course selection.
  • Individual learning styles – Boys and girls often learn differently, and in a co-educational learning environment, teachers tend to vary the style of presenting material to mixed sex classes rather than assuming that all boys or all girls learn the same way.
  • Social maturity and interpersonal skills – Students in a mixed sex environment tend to grow socially mature when they interact on a daily basis and learn to respect one other as equals. Single sex schools isolate students from the opposite sex except for organized events and special times, thereby reducing the opportunity to develop socially. Schools are a microcosm of society, and the interpersonal skills developed between the sexes are necessary once they graduate and move on to college or work where those skills will be necessary to succeed.
  • Extracurricular activities – Students in a co-educational school have a wider variety of activities to accommodate both sexes and allow for each sex to have the opportunity to experience activities that would normally be unavailable or limited in a single sex school.
  • More controlled environment – When students are in a co-educational setting, rules and behavior tend be more rigidly enforced to avoid situations that can result in embarrassment or legal difficulties for the school. Activities that may be overlooked or lightly disciplined in a same sex environment, such as strong language, are normally quickly corrected in a co-educational setting.

Although there are a number of advantages to a co-educational private boarding school there are also some disadvantages that should be recognized before making a final decision.
  • Girls find it harder to express themselves in class – Female students may feel at a disadvantage in a co-educational classroom where boys tend to dominate discussions. In some cases girls find it difficult to engage in discussions and therefore sit quietly and do not provide their thoughts. This tends to result in girls feeling less confident in engaging actively in classroom discussions.
  • Boys tend to get less help – Many times teachers will provide assistance to girls while feeling young men should be able to work it out themselves. This tends to put boys at a disadvantage when they are struggling.
  • Boys tend to become combative when reprimanded – When in a co-educational environment, young men may become combative when they feel embarrassed in front of girls. This can lead to disciplinary problems if not corrected immediately.
  • Unethical behavior – Students in a co-educational setting may become involved in activities with the opposite sex that are unethical or in the most serious cases, unlawful.

It is important when making a decision on whether to select a co-educational private boarding school that a careful evaluation of all the advantages and disadvantages be conducted. Keep in mind that those items considered disadvantages can be overcome by supervision, strict rule enforcement and a staff and faculty dedicated to your son or daughter’s well-being. We believe the staff and faculty at San Marcos Academy fit this description.
